Are all professional MC’s the same? No, not at all. I like to consider myself a “safe” MC. I like the planners to prepare their script for me to read over a few days prior should I have any questions. I’ll add my own personal experience to it, find some relevant information to add, maybe a few light jokes but for the most part, I’m an MC that delivers your message in a professional and well planned way. I am not a comedian and I don’t tap dance.  Other MC’s like to fly by the seat of their pants and ad-lib all night. They can tell jokes left and right, have people laughing non-stop and are still able to deliver the message professionally. Other MC’s are built in comedians and/or auctioneers – you pay more for those MC’s because they are what I call “a packaged deal”. I personally know a guy who is the MC plus the entertainment – he does a stand-up comedy routine and is the auctioneer as well. And to top it off, he has his own band and they’ll play at the dance as well. He’s a one man show .. but, it’ll cost you . and it should.

Before you look for a professional MC:

Know what kind of MC you want – do you want someone funny? Remember, sometimes an MC that “thinks” they are funny can do more damage than good.

Control – be sure you find an MC that works with you and doesn’t take over the show. You still need control of your event

Contract – put what you expect from your MC in writing and what the MC promises to provide in return. It’s important to have an agreement – some professional MC’s have their own contracts for you to sign.

Next time, have you picked the wrong MC?
